Requiring each farmer to have C&D insurance, will help get their farm cleaned up faster, thereby lessening the impact to other farmers within the 3 km zone. It should also help to pay for the backyard farmers not insured and not necessarily eager to clean up their premises to the required standard
With respect to earnings loss, the Boards should be part of the solution as we don’t want farmers to just collect insurance, we want to fill the production allotments. From an egg perspective if it means temporary US Imports then the windfall by the Board for buying cheaper eggs/chicks can be used to help the earning loss to the farm infected
Considerable time, energy and work has been undertaken by the poultry industry at the urging
of government since the 2004 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak to identify,
plan and implement measures to mitigate the risks of future AI discoveries. Subsequent
discoveries in 2005, 2009 and 2014 have reinforced the need for the industry to have an
effective risk mitigation strategy in place.
